Decorative carving is a type of relief carving. Ornament is a decorative detail used to embellish parts of a building or interior furnishing. A wide variety of decorative styles and motifs used for architecture and the applied arts are carved entrances, shop fascia lettering, panels for furniture and mantelpieces. Some motifs are abstract, designed from straight and curved variously composed lines and hatches. Generally these are vegetal motifs. Decorative carving takes a significant part when restoring old furniture nicked and broken ornament parts.
The letters and ornaments are drawn in pencil and then carved into the wood with a chisel. If there is same ornament remained in another part of furniture, plasticine or cardboard is used to make templets when restoring broken parts of ornament. The material used is basswood, cherry, birch, oak, mahogany.
